Roanoke City Council's honored Deputy Fire Chief Ralph Tartaglia for his service on Monday.
The council recognized Tartaglia for nearly four decades of service.
Tartag will retire at the end of June.
"Chief Taraglia has done a fabulous job for us for 37 years. He's protected our citizens and done everything he can to minimize the loss of property and death of fires through out the city," Roanoke City council member, Bill Bestpitch says. "We could never repay him for what he's done."
Battalion Chief Jeff Beckner will take over for Tartaglia as Deputy Chief.
The Federal Aviation Administration has lifted its ban on U.S. flights to Israel, which it had imposed out of concern over the risk of planes being hit by Hamas rockets.
A plane attempting to land in stormy weather crashed on a small Taiwanese island late Wednesday, killing 47 people and wrecking houses and cars on the ground.
