Largest NC school district may name superintendent

CARY, N.C. -

North Carolina's largest school system is narrowing down its choices for a new superintendent.

The Wake County Board of Education on Tuesday is expected to approve the contract for the system's new school superintendent. Its top candidates identified last month are the deputy superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and the superintendents of the school systems in Virginia Beach, Va., and Irving, Texas.

The new Wake County superintendent will oversee nearly 170 schools educating nearly 150,000 students in the 16th-largest district in the United States.

Virginia educator James Merrill has previous experience in Wake County. He left in 2000 to become superintendent of Alamance-Burlington Schools, then took his position leading the 70,000-student Virginia Beach school system in 2006.
