The Christiansburg Aquatic Center has a new record this morning for the largest swimming lesson, now it's waiting to see if it helped break a Guinness World Record.
120 swimmers took part in Tuesday's attempt at The World's Largest Swimming Lesson, a global effort to promote safety by holding a simultaneous swim lessons. The Galax Recreation Center also took part. Water parks and pools like the aquatic center hosted swimming lessons simultaneously at 11 a.m. with one goal in mind. "We do it just kind of to bring awareness to swim lessons," said Allison Zuchowski, Christiansburg Aquatic Center. "Basically swim lessons save lives, that's the basic reason that we do it. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of 14."
Tens of thousands of kids on five continents registered to take part. The numbers are still being tallied worldwide to see if the Guinness World Record was actually broken.
