Blacksburg Promenade project nears completion

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG, VA -

The concrete is being poured and parts of the sidewalk are put together like pieces in a puzzle. Crews are putting the final touches on a project to transform College Avenue in Downtown Blacksburg into a place for people to gather.

Laureen Blakemore is with Downtown Blacksburg Inc., and says early completion will boost business.

"It's just going to really help. That'll give the restaurants down here a chance to open up their outdoor dining, a little earlier than anticipated," said Blakemore.

Crews are well ahead of schedule, expecting to put this project to rest in a little more than two weeks. If it wasn't for the rain, officials say it would have been done earlier.

"It's nice to move a project forward and on time, and be able to tell the public that we did what we said we were going to do. sometimes in construction. things happen that are unforeseen. so many projects don't come in on time," said BrandonSteele.

Downtown leaders say because of all this open space, they hope to bring in a number of new events right here on College Avenue.

"We're already looking at a couple of new events just to have on this area that will be another draw to enjoy music or enjoy some performances," said Blakemore.

They are well ahead of schedule, much like crews hammering out the finishing touches on this project.
