NRV softball tournament to raise money for summer camp for kids with cancer

Posted: Updated:

This weekend a group of folks in the NRV are hosting a co-ed softball tournament in Blacksburg to make a difference for kids with cancer.

Money raised will benefit "Special Love," Virginia non-profit that offers support to children with cancer and their families, including summer camp.

Chris Thomas was just 9-years-old when he was diagnosed with leukemia and went to camp at Special Love.

He says he'll never forget what he said to his mom when he saw her for the first time after a week away.

"I got off the bus after my first week of camp and I ran up to my mom and spread my arms to hug her and I said mom I'm not un-normal," he explained.

Chris says Special Love isn't as well known in Southwest Virginia as it is in the rest of the commonwealth, so hopefully this weekend's tournament will also raise awareness in our area.

The tournament begins this Saturday at Jaycee Field in Blacksburg.  Opening Ceremonies begin just before noon.
