MARTINSVILLE, Va. (August 26, 2014) – Some of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s biggest wins have come on NASCAR's largest tracks. But it is the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' shortest track … Martinsville Speedway … that is a sentimental favorite for Earnhardt.Part of that sentiment stems from Earnhardt's love for the roots of racing, and no track has deeper roots in NASCAR than Martinsville Speedway. These kids are making a splash when it comes to fitness. They're swimming, biking and running their way toward a triathlon next month.

"I've done five triathlons," said 10 year-old Klaudia Kanfk, a veteran of youth triathlons. She watched her mother do it and decided to try it herself. "Getting out there, doing it, having fun and having accomplishment and pride," she said.

It's a feeling even newcomers like 5-year-old Hudson Grove are looking for. "I like the bike and the swim," he said.

If you think they're too young, think again. "It's not crazy," said Anne Jones. "We're going to teach them." Jones' TriAdventure in Blacksburg has been teaching and training adults to achieve their fitness goals for years. It added coaching for ages 4-10 this year after more kids wanted to get involved.

"The individual sports, the running, the biking, the swimming they can do forever," she said. "It's a life long sport."

The kids will train three times a week for a month before the triathlon which consists of biking and running a quarter mile and 25 yards in the pool. "They only have to get from one end of the pool to the other and they can wear their water wings," Jones explained. "We'll have people in the pool helping them."

They'll offer support and encouragement to help these young athletes develop good habits early.

The youth triathlon is July 14th. There are also events for adults and older kids.
