With school out and storms on our radar the past weeks, families have had to seek out indoor summer activities to pass the time. But, the Vinton pool on Washington Avenue refuses to give up.
Mary Beth Layman told us today that with local community support as well as three churches in our area (Vinton Wesleyan, Lynn Haven Baptist, and Thrasher Memorial Methodist), the pool still manages to bring the crowds in even when it's muggy out.
The three local churches have partnered to help keep the 64 year old pool up and running with community dinners Wednesday nights, renovations to the kitchen and concession stand, and even helping clean after last weeks Derecho.
Mary Beth Layman (Special Programs Director of Vinton) "They'll sweep a deck, or help pick up some chairs that might have been blown over by the wind, so we really have some great customers here that will pitch in and help."
In return for the volunteer work these churches do, the pool allows the church summer camps to come out on a sunny day, and the pool attempts to remain open as often as possible, weather permitting. They are hopeful for a more outdoors-friendly July.
Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. for the Blue Ridge Music Festival.
