Staying healthy on summer vacation

Posted: Updated:

Are you looking forward to that beach vacation? Maybe you have plans to stay closer to home and make a trip to Smith Mountain Lake. Either way once you are out of the "gym zone" it can be tough to keep up with your healthy routine. We check in with Chelsea Arner, Fitness Coordinator, Green Ridge Rec Center.

1. Pack and Plan

She says, "Make sure you bring your clothes with you. Bring your bathing suit. Bring your athletic shoes and clothes, that way you have more motivation to do it. Plan your workout first thing in the morning on vacation so you are more apt to do it."

2. Portion Control

She says, "At restaurants you can order a half a portion or you can get a portion put in a box to go. If you are at a buffet, choose the salad plate versus the dinner plate so you are eating smaller portions while you are there."

3. Fitness Friendly Place to Stay

She says, "See if there is a gym or swimming pool on the premises. If you don't have a gym or pool, try to go on a walk everyday or walk to the restaurants nearby. Take the kids to the beach or play in the ocean do things that you can stay active."

Good advice because we all want to hang on to the memories, but not the extra pounds that trip can create.
