Roanoke Fire-EMS hiring, promoting once again

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE -

Roanoke Fire-EMS will soon be seeing some changes in its ranks.

Due to retirements and some resignations, the department will be promoting more than a dozen firefighters this year.

Chief David Hoback also plans on hiring six to eight new firefighters this fall from the recruit school.

The recruits graduate in July.

It's welcome news for Hoback after budget concerns prevented much hiring or promoting from within.

"This is actually the first time in several years that we've been able to promote," he said. "This is a good thing for the organization. It's healthy, it really brings energy back to the organization, and people can compete."

Given the number of openings Hoback said there's a chance another recruit school will be held within the next year.
