ROANOKE, VA -

When kids are out of school for the summer sometimes they don't have access to healthy food. Some Roanoke Valley organizations are working together to help.

Dozens of children swim on the Barracuda team in Roanoke City at Booker T. Washington Park. It's organized by the Advancement Foundation and sponsored by Member One Federal Credit Union who helped purchase uniforms, memberships and goggles.

On Wednesdays and Fridays after they swim, the children get free lunch. It's provided by the YMCA through a $55,000 grant driven by the USDA. They say the partnership is a way to give kids healthy food and healthy activities.

"That's the big focus here is we're all a partnership in this bringing families together. Swimming is a sport that everyone can do together and it teaches leadership, it teaches teamwork" said Mark Hudzik, a YMCA board member and Member One employee.

"I swim with my friends and we compete with each other" said Zackery King, a 10-year-old swimmer on the team.

Other YMCA programs also get healthy food through the program too.
