Gainsboro YMCA gets facelift, doubles membership

ROANOKE, VA -

New paint and a new roof. The YMCA at Gainsboro is getting a facelift.

"It used to look rundown and they had darker colors outside" said Howard Tucker, who has been a YMCA member for about five years and likes the changes. "It being spruced up inside and you're in here trying to exercise, it puts a little pep in your step."

At the beginning of the year, they dropped the membership fee to $10 to use the weight room and cardio equipment. They say in that time they've more than doubled their membership.

"When we lowered the price, we relieved all the price barriers we had before and were able to accommodate and fit into more people's lives" said Kim Bratic, with the YMCA of Roanoke Valley. "It feels excellent because we hear from our members that we're really serving the community in a way that we haven't done before."

They started the year with about 200 members and now they're up to about 500.

"The budget works out for everyone. You don't have to pay the big fees for the big gyms if you're just interested in coming in and working out" said Scottie Myers who joined about six weeks ago and likes the new look. "It's looking more like a YMCA now. For years it just looked like an empty building here and I really didn't know what it was but now it's looking more like a Y."

"We wanted people to know our outside is reflective of our inside, there's a lot going on here" said Bratic.

They're looking forward to more in the future.

The YMCA says the renovation money comes from savings and building funds not from fundraising dollars.
