Families of Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook shootings join together

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG, VA -

Families of the victims of the Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook school shootings came together today in Blacksburg as part of a national tour. The group says its agenda is to reduce gun violence.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns hosted the No More Names bus tour and rally at Marcia Park. The event is about spreading awareness.

Many in the group know what it's like to lose a loved one because of gun violence.

Families from Virginia Tech are helping families from the Sandy Hook shootings.

"It's hard to say.  It's different.  It's a club that nobody wants to be part of" said Neil Heslin who lost his son Jesse at Sandy Hook.

The group will be reading names of victims it claims died of gun violence until 9 p.m.

Peter Read, who lost his daughter Mary in Norris Hall at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, called it a "kinship" with the Newtown families that was hard to explain.

"It's deeply touching," Read said.  "It reminds me of where [the Virginia Tech families] were at [six months after the shootings]."

The Sandy Hook shootings were six months and one week ago.
