RALEIGH, N.C. -

Shaw University is pulling the plug on its baseball team, citing the need "to address the fiscal needs of the entire athletic program."

"This was a difficult decision to make," said Interim Athletic Director Marcus Clarke. "Shaw has a long tradition in baseball, however ... it became apparent that reducing the number of sports was a tough, but necessary decision that had to be made at this point."

The Bears finished the 2013 season 8-26, and 1-17 in the CIAA. Over the last three seasons, the Bears were 34-78, with a 16-48 mark in the conference.

Shaw won CIAA championships in 1947, 1969, 1982, 1993, 2001, 2002 and 2006.
