Hopewell -

Just because school's out for summer... doesn't mean students have to stop learning.

Teachers in Hopewell -- just north of Petersburg -- are trying something new with the James River Expeditions. They're taking a group of students from around Virginia in canoes, rafts and other watercraft to learn more about the nation's founding river.

The expedition started yesterday in Iron Gate. Today, a group of 12 students and 3 teachers with the James River Expeditions spent their first full day on the river. The eight-day trip gives high school students real-life experiences that help them get ahead in some of their classes... by learning about water quality testing and the surrounding environmental aspects of the river.

In total, three separate groups of students will explore the James River from the headwaters all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. This is only the third year of these educational river expeditions, but it's a trip that seems to be loved by both teachers and students.
