Filmmaker offers free movie screening for film shot in Floyd

FLOYD COUNTY -

That's Floyd's Rob Neukirch playing the role of realtor in the soon to be released House of Good and Evil. The psychological thriller shot in Floyd last year will be released next fall but Neukirch, who was there for half of the 12 day shoot and obviously read the script was even caught off guard. "I saw the movie a couple weeks ago in Asheville for the first time. I jumped twice," he said.

Production company Shooting Creek Films chose Floyd for its setting and knew of it because the writer's wife is a native. When the crew got here, it knew the film could not have been made for less money anywhere else. It still pumped more than $60,000 into the local economy.

Shooting Creek Films is now thanking Floyd with a free screening of the film Saturday at Chantilly Farm, the perfect setting for this outdoor showing. "Here with the crickets, the dark and whatever," Neukirch said. "Yeah, I think people are definitely going to react."

Reaction has been positive so far. House of Good and Evil won feature film at the Twin River Media Festival in Asheville last month. "The accolades and the reviews online and what people are saying about it, it's just incredible. It's been incredible."

Reviews about filming in Floyd have also been rave. Shooting Creek says it would film here again and has recommended Floyd to other filmmakers. Neukirch isn't surprised. "Anyone who came to Floyd, I can't imagine they'd have anything different than that, a great experience," said. But experiencing the finished product, is nothing you can prepare for, he joked. "Go around your house and scare your wife, scare your kids. Have them jump out of closets."

Grab a blanket, the screening is Saturday, June 29. Some of the cast and filmmakers will be there for a meet and greet at 7:30 p.m., the film will start at 9 p.m. Nationwide release is set for October 1.
