Red Hat debuts new downtown Raleigh headquarters

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Software developer Red Hat officially opened its new headquarters in downtown Raleigh Monday morning.

Gov. Pat McCrory attended a ribbon-cutting with top Red Hat officials.

McCrory estimates the company will have about a $1.5 billion dollar positive impact on the state's economy.

"This commitment to this building and to these blocks will spread to other blocks and bring other talent and other businesses to this area and other young talent to North Carolina and to Raleigh," McCrory said.

Red Hat announced in 2011 it would move from its location at N.C. State's Centennial Campus to downtown. It came as Progress Energy was moving hundreds of jobs out after Progress merged with Duke Energy.

At the time Red Hat announced it would bring 750 jobs to downtown.

The company is eligible to receive more than $15 million in state incentives if it adds more than 500 workers there. Red Hat leaders have said they plan to hire 540 more people in the next 10 years. That's hundreds of more customers for downtown businesses.

The company has already brought along 900 employees to it's new location.

Last year, Red Hat and the city of Raleigh reached a five year deal to name the downtown amphitheater after the company.

It comes as Red Hat hopes to continue to make a name for itself in the tech world.

"They're creating jobs, they're an innovative company, they have talent that's second to none across the country, and they have leadership employees who care for their community and care for their state," said McCrory.

It's preparing to introduce new technology that Red Hat leaders hope could re-define the company. The software, which will be unveiled next month, will allow businesses to build their own private storage space known as clouds.
