Attempted extortion of Virginia State Trooper

Posted: Updated:

Court documents show a Rocky Mount man attempted to extort money from a Virginia State Trooper.

J.T. Harris is the trooper involved in the case. He's been an employee with the Virginia State Police for 44 years.

Courtney Hall is being charged for trying to extort $40-50,000 in exchange for an explicit photo, which would implicate the state trooper in an extra-marital affair.

The investigation began on May 29th. The documents show Harris received a text with an explicit picture of a woman said to be Hall's girlfriend.

Harris then got a follow up text from Hall saying 'if did not agree to give him the money, he would tell 'Harris' supervisor, wife, and others that Harris was engaging in sexual relations with Hall's girlfriend.'

Another officer saw the text messages being sent and also watched a transaction at a convenient store in Boones Mill. Harris met Hall and agreed to give him $5,000. The officer watched the transfer of money and immediately arrested Hall after.

Later, Hall did admit to sending the texts to Harris and demanding money.

Hall was booked into jail on May 29th, but was released on a $15,000 bond on June 6th.

A preliminary hearing on this case is set for July 23rd.

Extortion is a class 5 felony, which means Hall may face 10 years in prison if he's convicted
