Dump truck swerves to avoid car, goes over bridge on I-26

Posted: Updated:

New Channel 11 has learned a dump truck carrying rocks went over a bridge on I-26 in Kingsport and landed in the parking lot of Domtar Park.

The dump truck driver, David Jeffers, suffered a head skull fracture and a side injury – the next 12 hours will be critical for his recovery.

Rescue workers told News Channel 11 Jeffers was traveling eastbound when he swerved to avoid a car.

Police believe the driver of a car in front of the dump truck had a medical problem that caused the dump truck driver to swerve. A HAZMAT cleanup of diesel fuel will take much of the day, as well as large rocks the truck was hauling.

Jeffers is currently in serious condition at Holston Valley.

We'll bring you the latest information on this accident as soon as it becomes available.
