3 bear sightings reported in Carrboro neighborhoods

Posted: Updated:
CARRBORO, N.C. -

Carrboro Police say they have responded to three reports of bear sightings in the last two days.

The first two sightings took place Wednesday in the area of Pine Street near Oak Street and Oak Ave. near E. Poplar Ave.

On Thursday, a bear was spotted in the area of Smith Level Road near BPW Club Road.

Police warn residents not to approach the bear and to call 911 if they feel the bear is posing a hazard.

Elaine Gaertner lives on Oak St. and saw the bear in her front yard.

"As I was coming out the door I looked to the right and saw the bear about 10 to 15 feet from me," she said.

Her son was crossing the street from a neighbor's house, just as the bear was passing through her yard.

"My first thought was for my son to come faster so I could get him in the house and then I realized how close the bear was and I stopped and was like go back! Go back!" she explained.

Tips if you see a bear:

  • Keep your distance from the bear.
  • Do not feed the bear or leave food sources outside your home that may attract the bear.
  • Bears climb trees if they feel threatened. If you see a bear in a tree, leave the area and the bear will come down when it no longer feels threatened.
