NC State, UNC, Duke players await NBA Draft

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Don't look for the Triangle's ACC basketball teams to have a major impact Thursday night, when the NBA draft is held. And two N.C. State players who left school early, Lorenzo Brown and C.J. Leslie, may be fortunate to hear their names called in the first round.

While recent drafts have been packed with local players, this year's crop features North Carolina, N.C. State and Duke players hoping to snatch a spot in the 30-pick first round.

Duke center Mason Plumlee could be the first local player selected. Plumlee is an athletic senior but not a skilled shooter, especially by NBA standards. An NBC Sports mock draft has him going 22nd, to the Brooklyn Nets, and USA Today has him going 18th, to the Atlanta Hawks.

UNC star Reggie Bullock, who is from Kinston, also projected as a late first-round pick. The  6-foot-7 Bullock is picked to go 23rd, according to NBC Sports. Some other mock drafts do not have him in the first round at all.

"Hopefully it all works out that I can be in the first round, but I'm not expecting anything," Bullock told InsideCarolina.com. "I feel like I just need a chance. ... Wherever I land, I'm just glad to be in this process. I'm just going to work hard to be on an NBA team roster, and hopefully it'll all work out from there."

N.C. State point guard Lorenzo Brown left after his junior year and could land in the first round. Brown, at 6 feet 5, is a big, athletic player who can handle the rugged NBA season. But he's not a gifted shooter or passer.

C.J. Leslie, who frustrated Wolfpack fans with inconsistent play, may be lucky to make the first round after leaving State early as well. Leslie played at Raleigh's Word of God High.

NBA teams may have more interest in the Wolfpack's Richard Howell, whose game is marked by burly play inside.

Duke forward Ryan Kelly, who is from Raleigh and played at Ravenscroft, could also be drafted during the second round of the draft.
