Durham Sheriff's Office warns against 'staged crashes'

DURHAM, N.C. -

The Durham Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a growing scam called "staged crashes."

In fact, the department put a link to an MSN video about the matter on their Facebook page.

The FBI even warns drivers to be careful about the scam in a news release from 2005. In that, the FBI said at the time that staged accidents cost the insurance industry $20 billion a year.

In a staged accident, the scammers slam on brakes ahead of an unsuspecting driver, or pull into their lane to cause a collision.

The scammers then look to collect insurance money through fraudulent medical claims.

The FBI warns drivers to report the accidents to the police, and not to settle for cash on the scene.

The Durham Sheriff's Office said it has not seen any incidents of this type yet but wanted drivers in the area to be on the alert.
