GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Attorneys for City of Greenville have filed a lawsuit against five uptown nightclubs saying they owe more than $60,000 in fines.

Rob Waldron, co-owner of Club 519 and 5th Street Distillery, says regulations on nightclub bouncers in Greenville's uptown district are too much.

"I have very little turnover, you want me to file the same report this month, next month, the month after that - after a while it really becomes difficult to take these people seriously," said Waldron.

After a double murder at The Other Place nightclub in 2009, the city passed laws that required bouncers to undergo background checks and police training. It mandated club owners re-register bouncers every month as part of a compromise deal.

9 On Your Side uncovered five clubs, including Waldron's, that owe more than $60,000 the city says was incurred from fines after they failed to register bouncers. Those nightclubs include The Phoenix at $34,300, The Other Place at $19,400, 5th Street Distillery at $1,350, Club 519 at $2,750 and Rum Republic at $6,150.

Waldron says a computer error with the city caused his reports to not register.

Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas says a law is a law.

"Some of those businesses even on that list are some of our best partners now and they're helping to improve the community but the facts are we need to work together to help make it better," said Thomas.

We attempted to contact the other club owners multiple times but were unsuccessful. They all have 30 days after being notified of the lawsuit to respond.
