Changing light bulbs costs Roanoke city schools over $1,000,000

Posted: Updated:

Changing light bulbs is costing the Roanoke city school system more than $1,000,000.

Thanks to federal regulations that went into effect in 2010, some old style light bulbs and circuitry has been phased out, not being manufactured anymore.

The school district is spending $555,000 this summer alone to change the light bulbs and ballasts in five schools.

The district will have to spend $700,000 next summer to outfit a few more schools with the updated bulbs and ballasts.

It will spend another $100,000 during the summer of 2015, the final phase of the project.

The school district is paying for the upgrade using low to zero interest loans set up by the federal government.

Deputy superintendent Curt Baker said the change over will save money on the school system's electric bills since it's far more efficient than previous bulbs.
