Roanoke County looking for more consistent mowing from VDOT

ROANOKE COUNTY -

Governor Bob McDonnell is pushing for more mowing on Virginia's medians ahead of the Independence Day weekend.

That push is helping areas like Roanoke County, which regularly deals with overgrown grass.

The medians are maintained by VDOT, but Roanoke County Supervisor Charlotte Moore said the agency's schedule has been inconsistent at best.

She helped start a volunteer mowing program with local businesses in exchange for advertising.

It's been slow so far, but she's hopeful one way or another the medians will be maintained regularly.

"We will touch base with VDOT to see how consistent they will be with it," she said. "Hopefully they will be on a different routine now to where they will be mowing at least once a month instead of every three to six months in some areas."

Moore said from a safety standpoint the county has to find a way to keep the medians maintained.
