Interfaith Food Shuttle prepares meals for thousands of Triangle kids

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Not everyone has the luxury of always having food in their fridge or pantry and thousands of children in the Triangle rely on free or reduced meals. But when schools are out for the summer, the generosity of the Interfaith Food Shuttle comes to the rescue.

But Terri Hutter with the Interfaith Food Shuttle says coming up with a healthy, kid-friendly menu can be a bit of a challenge because it all depends on what food has been donated.

"We get to play mystery basket every day," Hutter says. "We try to use produce from our farm as much as possible.  We have a lot of cabbage coming in this week that we'll use at the end of the week."

Hutter says they sometimes have to talk the kids into trying new foods, which eventually, they end up liking.

But Hutter isn't the only one preparing meals. Interns from the Interfaith Food Shuttle's culinary job training program help cook the meals.
