The Virginia Museum of Transportation set a goal Friday morning it'll need 3.5 million steps to accomplish, that's the amount the museum needs to raise to put its historic 611 steam engine back in service.
The museum knows how much money and repairs it'll need to return the engine to excursion status, so it launched the fundraising campaign.
It also looks at a working steam engine as a big economic generator for Roanoke.
"We're kinda looking at it with baited breath," explained museum executive director Bev Fitzpatrick, Jr. "[We're] thinking this could be the grandest thing that ever happened to Roanoke. [People looking to ride the train] would spend the night in hotels, eat, and all that."
The museum has to hit its fundraising goal by Halloween to qualify the historic 611 for the Norfolk Southern 21st Century Steam Program, a series of special excursions sponsored by the railroad company.
