DURHAM, N.C. -

Supporters of a man accused of shooting a Durham police officer last year are demanding his release.  A small group of family, friends and others rallied outside Durham Police headquarters in support of 21-year-old Carlos Rliey Jr.

Riley was arrested in December, charged in connection with shooting officer Kelly Stewart following an argument at a traffic stop near the Forest Pointe Apartments on Forest Road.  Riley's attorney says the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.  Protestors say this incident is a part of ongoing racial profiling and police brutality both in Durham and nationwide.

"We just want to, you know, bring awareness to the city, let them know what some of these police officers are doing," Carlos Riley's aunt Cheryl Riley said, "that it's wrong, and we hope it opens their eyes and sheds a new light on it."

Durham Police are not commenting on the protest citing pending litigation.  Riley remains in jail awaiting a court date in July.
