Gun owners talk Greenville shooting and permits

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

A week after police say 23-year-old Lakim Faust shot four people near the Walmart parking lot, guns made a return to Greenville, but this time in a non-violent manner.

9 On Your Side went to the S& D Gun Show at the Greenville Convention Center to find out if that shooting had changed their mentality.

"I think everyone should get a permit," said Joel McDowell

Following the June 21st shooting spree, 9 On Your Side found out the Pitt County Sheriff's Department denied Faust a gun permit. However, the shooting suspect was still able to get his hands on shotgun. Part of the reason, in North Carolina a gun permit is not required to buy a long gun or rifle.

Dale Dotson is a gun owner who works for Hunters Helping Kids. A non-profit that teaches kids how to properly use a gun for hunting. Dotson says, permit or not, if a bad guy wants a gun they'll figure out a way to get one.

For avid hunter, Blake Bailey, he says one bad person, shouldn't ruin it for legal gun owners.

"It wouldn't be hard for him to get a gun whether or not they issue a permit law or not, because private owners don't have to look at your permit to sell you a gun. I agree that in some ways there should be tighter laws to protect against things like what happened last Friday in Greenville. But you can't tighten laws because of what one person did," Bailey.
