Orange County hit with major flooding

Posted: Updated:

Heavy rains dumped several inches of rain in Orange County, causing flooding in the Town of Chapel Hill and other areas Sunday.

A raging river of storm water flooded the first floor units at the Camelot Village apartments.

Residents were carried out by hand or wheelchair, and boats were even on standby if needed. Rescuers could be seen with pets in their arms as well, as they helped residents get to dry land.

"I was out walking around, and bam! It flooded," said one resident. He said his apartment was "Waist deep in water--everything floatin'."

The Red Cross set up a shelter for displaced residents at nearby Smith Middle School.

"We are going to surround people with services to get them back in a safe location, {so they} can get their lives back together as soon as possible," said Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt.

He said the shelter will remain open as long as it is needed.

Beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, the Chapel Hill Fire Department activated the Emergency Operation Center to respond. Calls for assistance varied from natural gas leaks, trees on power lines, trees down and blocking roadways, automatic fire alarms, house leaks and basement floods.

The lower level of Chapel Hill's Town Hall also sustained flooding.
