RALEIGH, N.C. -

On something that is becoming a norm as the work week begins, the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP held its ninth "Moral Monday" protest at the North Carolina General Assembly, with Monday's event focusing on cuts to unemployment benefits.

The NAACP held the rally behind the Legislative Building, followed by protests to highlight the first day federal unemployment benefits are cut off for 70,000 people. North Carolina is the first state to disqualify itself from collecting extended benefits as state leaders choose to pay down a debt to the federal government faster.

NAACP field secretary Rob Stephens said at 8:21 p.m. that more than 80 people had been arrested.

An exact size of the crowd was uncertain. A WNCN crew on the scene estimated the crowd at about 1,500 at around 6 p.m. The NAACP put the crowd at 6,000 in its report to the media at 8:21 p.m.

Nearly 600 people have been arrested protesting the policies of the Republican-controlled legislature. The NAACP and its supporters oppose the GOP's economic, social, education and voting policies.

Republicans control the legislature and governor's mansion for the first time in more than a century.

Protesters say Monday's rally had a special meaning because a law cutting benefits is now in effect.

Winnie Bowlan, who is unemployed said, "I call North Carolina home, but that decision is very hard to embrace right now, definitely based on my financial situation."

Hundreds of people joined the rally at the General Assembly Monday night.
