New proposal for storm water run-off fees in Roanoke City

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke City council members continue the discussion of fixing the $74 million storm water run-off problem with an adjusted utility fee.

Back in 2010, city leaders suggested a set utility fee, of $3 a month.

Monday, they've changed that proposal slightly, so property owners will pay for what they own. So, if you have a smaller house, you'll pay a small fee.

The city engineer, Phil Schirmer, says they will use GIS technology to measure the amount of property you have as it relates to storm water run off.

Council members also stressed the importance of all the information being made available to the public before the ordinance is voted on in September.

Council members also asked for more incentives to be put into place. Plus, for fees to be collected two or three times a year, so people won't have to pay all at once..
