Governor's Bowl food drive nearing an end

Posted: Updated:

The Governor's Bowl, a campaign that runs from Memorial Day to Independence Day, helping the state's food banks stay stocked up during the summer wraps up on this Thursday.

Feeding America Southwest Virginia says six chambers and 20 state agencies in our area are in the race to win the 2013 governor's cup.

I'm told food drives like the Governor's Bowl, Stamp Out Hunger and the Legal Food Frenzy are very important and bring in the most food to the Feeding America shelves.

In the lobby of the Salem - Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce is a box full of donated food.

Executive Director Debbie Kavitz says this cause is proof our business community finds it important to give back.

"The thing that I saw around our board table was the business community responded with warm hearts and generous pockets, they wanted to do it, there was no question about whether or not we would, the need is apparent and the need is there," Kavitz explained.

The deadline to donate is this Thursday, July 4th.

If you would like to donate you can drop off food at these locations …
