Roanoke County supervisor wants to increase littering fines

A Roanoke County supervisor is fighting to increase fines for littering in the county.

Charlotte Moore plans to introduce a countywide $50 fine to the board of supervisors this summer to help combat littering.

She said it's needed since the problem seems to be getting worse.

"The cigarette butts go down storm water drains and cause issues there. But it's an eye sore, it's a huge eye sore," Moore said. "We see chicken dinners, plastic bags, a lot of cans just thrown out the windows."

Virginia already has a littering law on the books.

It's punishable by a minimum $250 fine, jail time, or community service.

But since 2008, only 25 people in Roanoke County have been charged with littering.
