The fair must go on: Salem Fair plans to open tonight despite weather

SALEM, VA -

Organizers of the Salem Fair say visitors can expect a lot things when it kicks off Wednesday night -- they just hope a washout isn't one of them.  As of this morning, they say they still plan to open at 4:00pm but they're keeping a close eye on the weather.

The 26th annual fair features 14 acres of carnival space on the midway, more than 40 rides including the new 80 foot tall Vertigo, and more than 30 food vendors -- including one that will be serving up fried gummy bears.

There's also a petting zoo and nearly a dozen different shows and performances.

All you pay for is the rides, the food, and the games.  Entry into the fair and all of the shows are free.

Organizers say they're hoping to see between 250,000 and 300,000 people over the 12 days the fair runs.

"It's very dependent upon rain," said Carey Harveycutter, Chairman of the Salem Fair.  "We've said many times in the fair industry -- fair weather makes for a very good fair manager.  But if you have rain, you deal with it and you go forward."

Each day of the fair, there will be special ride ticket promotions where visitors can purchase unlimited rides for a special price.  Visit www.salemfair.com for that information.  Otherwise, each ride ticket costs $1.25.  Organizers say they will not be able to make any rain checks for the unlimited ride promotions.
