NC Senate gives final approval to latest tax plan

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The latest plan by Senate Republicans to cut North Carolina income taxes and adjust sales taxes is now out of the Senate and heading to the House, where its future is uncertain.

The Senate voted 29-14 Wednesday for the bill that GOP leaders contend will give nearly all families in the state a tax break and make North Carolina more competitive with surrounding states in recruiting new companies.

The measure would eliminate the corporate income tax over time and reduce the state's three individual income tax rates to one flat rate. Many sales tax exemptions would be eliminated or scaled back.

Democrats say the proposal will only benefit the wealthy and out-of-state corporations, not the middle class.

The House has a rival tax plan that Gov. Pat McCrory has favored.
