Roanoke River flooding blocks roads, causes swift water rescues

ROANOKE, VA -
The Roanoke River is three feet above flood stage in Roanoke, as of Thursday morning.
Roanoke City Fire-EMS says its swift water rescue teams helped save 29 people overnight from high water. Especially hard hit were the Meadowbrook area near Peters Creek Road, and in the Eastern Avenue neighborhood.
Along the river itself, parts of the Roanoke River Greenway are underwater. High water covers miles posts along the Greenway near Wiley Drive.
Emergency workers remind everyone to never drive over flooded roadways or around barricades
Roanoke City staff is meeting with the promoters for the Music For Americans event and fireworks scheduled for tonight at River's Edge to assess whether to move forward with the events.
