DUI blamed for Smith Mountain Lake boat crash

Posted: Updated:

Virginia Conservation Police believe the operator of a boat was driving drunk late Wednesday night, and crashed into a floating dock on the Franklin County side.

According to Officer Michael Morris, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries received a call shortly before 11:30 p.m. about a loud crash across from the Penhook boat ramp.

Investigators determined that a man operating a blue deck boat, hit a floating dock that had two jet-skis attached.  The boat then drove away.

The crash damaged the dock, jet-skis, and the boat.

Officer Morris believes the man was driving under the influence, but did not release his name.

The man has been charged with:

  • Operating a motorboat under the influence
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Failing to report an accident within a reasonable time
