ROANOKE COUNTY -

Update 3:53 p.m.

Cleaning his basement isn't exactly how Joe Comer wanted to spend his Independence Day.

"We had planned on a cookout for family and friends but we put that on hold until the weekend," he said. "I don't have much of a choice but you do what you have to do."

Flood water made its way into Comer's house early Thursday morning after Carvins Creek overflowed.

It runs behind his home. By 11 a.m. the creek had taken over half of his backyard and flooded his basement.

"I'm just glad it's not up any higher than it is," he said. "My basement would be totally flooded."

Luckily only books and some clothes were damaged.

A few houses down the road is where Steve Hughes lives.

His yard backs up into Brookside Park, which at least for Thursday looked more like Brookside lake.

He's lived next to the park for 21 years, but Thursday morning was a first.

"The runoff got a lot heavier this morning," Hughes said. "I woke up and I thought I was at the beach because I could hear the water rushing real loud."

Hughes said he was shocked to see the amount of water in the park and the damage it caused.

"This is the worst I've seen it," he said. "The debris is up on the fence, I've never seen it like that before. This is a milestone."

A milestone neighbors hope won't be remain a constant reminder in their backyards.

-----

Normally Brookside Park is full of kids on the 4th of July. But today it is underwater.
Carvins Creek overflowed in the Clubhouse Drive neighborhood of Roanoke County Wednesday night.
Neighbors say it is the worst flooding they've seen since 1985.
Aaron Martin will have more on the flooding tonight on WSLS at 6.
