Report IDs man who rented car UNC's Hairston drove when arrested

DURHAM, N.C. -

The rental car that University of North Carolina basketball player P.J. Hairston was driving when arrested had been rented by Haydn Thomas of Durham, according to USA Today.

Also in the car with Hairston at the time was Miykael Faulcon of Durham.

Thomas told USA Today, "I don't know P.J. Hairston. I know Miykael, his friend. I don't know anyone at Carolina. I don't even like the Carolina team. Look at the age disparity between me and those boys. I could be their father."

USA Today reported that Thomas rented the car June 2 at Raleigh-Durham International Airport and returned it June 5. Thomas told USA Today he was not a UNC booster and knew Faulcon from "partying at clubs."

Police say a 9 mm gun was found outside Hairston's vehicle when he was arrested for possession of marijuana and driving without a license June 5.

Hairston was stopped at a license check on Holloway Street in Durham. Two passengers -- Faulcon and Carlos Sanford -- were also charged with possession of marijuana.

Police say a gun was on the ground outside Hairston's vehicle at the time of the arrest. It was not immediately clear to whom the gun belonged.

Hairston, a 6-foot-5 guard from Greensboro, led the Tar Heels in scoring last season, at 14.6 points per game as a sophomore.

Hairston started Carolina's final 13 games and was a key to the Tar Heels' late-season turnaround.
