Spirit FM founders announce retirement

Posted: Updated:
LYNCHBURG, VA -

The founders of Spirit FM will retire later this month.

Linda and Barry Armstrong founded the radio ministry in 1994. For the first 11 years, the pair co-hosted the Spirit FM morning show. Barry stepped off the mornings in 2005 to concentrate on his duties as General Manager. "We watched God build something from nothing," Barry Armstrong, who has served as the ministry's general manager, said. "Thanks to our many friends and supporters, the station is financially stable. There is a godly leadership team in place with a fresh vision. They are fully capable of taking Spirit FM to the next level."

The two have worked together with WSLS through the years on many relief efforts, including our holiday haul last December to make sure children impacted by Superstorm Sandy had toys for Christmas. Barry described that event as one of the greatest promotions in all of his years.

Linda's last day on-the-air as co-host of the Spirit FM Morning Show with Michael Brown will be Friday, July 12th. The couple's last official day of service to the radio ministry will be July 31st.

Linda said she will really miss her on-air role and that she and Barry will miss the close connection with Spirit FM listeners. "This has been the greatest time of my life in so many ways," she added. "But, I am a grandmother with another grandchild on the way. I look forward to having more free time to enjoy my family."

Spirit FM says it's conducting a nationwide search for a new morning show co-host, and will name someone to fill Linda's position in a few weeks, according to Station Manager Marc Tischart.

Listeners can enjoy a look back at almost two decades of broadcasting next week during the Spirit FM Morning Show, Tischart said. In addition, a station open house is planned for Wednesday, July 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To RSVP, contact the station at (800) 774-9798.
