Danville tractor trailer crash damages fence, guardrail near airport

Posted: Updated:

Danville City crews are cleaning up the mess caused by a tractor trailer accident near the airport Thursday night.

Police say 56-year-old William Woods Jr., of Pittsylvania County, was driving east around 8:26 p.m., when lost control of his 2005 Volvo big rig in the 1400 block of South Boston Road (Route 58).  The truck slid 300 yards, and stopped on an embankment.

Officers found the truck caused $15,000 worth of damage to a fence line, $9,000 in damage to a guardrail, and $1,000 damage in landscaping work.  The truck itself received $15,000 in damage.

The crash caused traffic delays on Route 58 for about two hours Thursday night.

Police charged Woods Jr. with having defective equipment.

The investigation is ongoing.
