Marine Corps museum gets statue honoring women

Posted: Updated:

TRIANGLE, Va. (AP) - The National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va., is recognizing the service of female Marines.

Friday's dedication of a Molly Marine statue marks the culmination of fundraising efforts by the Young Marines organization and the Women Marines Association.

The statue is a replica of a statue placed in New Orleans in 1943. It shows a uniformed woman facing proudly into the wind.

This is the 70th year of women serving continuously in the Marines. They began serving as wartime clerical fill-ins as early as 1918.

The Women Marines Association says about 6 percent of Marines are female.

The museum is near the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va.
