Boat runs off Smith Mountain Lake

Posted: Updated:

John Koloda, with the department of Game and Inland Fisheries, tells WSLS that a boat ran off Smith Mountain lake at about 11:15 p.m. last night at channel B-28.

Kolada says the particular channel marker is hard to see at night, causing the boat to run off the lake, onto the land.

No alcohol was involved and no one inside the boat suffered major injuries.

The boat had just passed a DUI checkpoint.

Richard Dudley, who heard the crash after coming home from watching fireworks, said there were 10 people on the boat.

The driver of the boat has been charged with wreckless operation of a boat.
