Posted: Updated:

Since Virginia Tech is in the process of finding a replacement for retiring president Dr. Charles Steger, we checked his 2012-13 compensation package to see what the next university president might expect.

Here's what we found:

Base salary (covered by taxpayers):  $184,919

Private supplement (paid by the Virginia Tech Foundation): $311,769

State bonus (all eligible state employees received 3 percent bonus): $14,900

Annual performance bonus: $24,834

Additional one-time bonus: $30,000

Deferred compensation: $253,575

VRS Restoration Program:  $13,436

Auto allowance:  $20,000

Total:  $853,433

Steger will stay on until the university finds its 16th president.

A search committee has been named.  The school also hired a private search firm to help.
