When the floods came, it brought more than what was expected for people at Smith Mountain Lake and long the Roanoke River. Many homeowners got a nice water-front view full of trash.

Literally tons of debris floated downstream even as the Roanoke River recedes.

The trash made the July 4th holiday impossible to navigate.

Full docks mean empty wallets for Bay Rock Marina Manager Wayne Mize.

"Any debris going down can be dangerous." Mize said. " We encouraged people yesterday not to go on the water."

He says unusual summer weather takes a hard hit on business, especially when boaters can't launch from their docks.

"This is the first year we have had three waves of major flooding and each one brings an amount of debris."

Last year alone, AEP reported collecting over five tons of debris. That's on top of public lake clean ups. Bay Rock Marina Manager Kristina Mize says a lot of that trash falls back on personal responsibility.

"I'm sure some of it is an accident  but there is a lot of trash mixed in with natural debris that we have to be conscious of," Mize said.
