Heavy rains bring NC high water levels, dangerous conditions

Posted: Updated:
JORDAN LAKE, N.C. -

Heavy rain for the past week has created dangerous conditions for boaters and swimmers.

There were three water rescues on Friday.

"Every 4th of July weekend were usually very busy out here, a lot of people are off and come to the lake," explained Sgt. Reggie Barker with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

At about 7 to 8 feet above normal, Jordan Lake and surrounding rivers are filled up.

"It's kind of hard to recognize the landscape and getting around because you're used to looking for landmarks and now they're gone cause the water level is so high," described one boater.

They're conditions a lot of adventure seekers look for but it can be dangerous.

"Talking with the fire department they've had 3 or 4 water rescues in the last 48 hours," said Barker. "The higher the water is the faster it flows and a lot of people aren't used to that and don't know how to handle it."

Rescue officials are warning kayakers to think twice before getting in the water.

"If your senses tell you, you shouldn't be out there; you probably shouldn't be out there," explained Barker.

Even if you're in a boat wildlife officers say to keep an extra eye out.

"Especially on the south end of the lake where the river runs into the lake, there's a lot of debris," said Barker.

As always, keep life jackets on board.

"I've never pulled a drowning victim out of the lake that was wearing a life jacket," explained Barker.

It's not only safe, it's the law.
