3 southwest Virginians win lottery's top prize

Three southwest Virginians have won the top prize in the June 28th Virginia Lottery Cash 5 game.

The Virginia Lottery says that drawing produced an unusually large number of winning tickets. 12 tickets matched all 5 numbers (The winning numbers in the June 28 day drawing were 3-6-9-12-15) to win $100,000 each. An additional seven tickets each won $50,000 and 15 tickets won $25,000. The total payout in that one drawing was more than $1.9 million.

Eilene Connor of Montvale

Eilene Connor of Montvale discovered she had won the top prize in Cash 5 when her husband saw her numbers in the paper. She didn't have much of a reaction because she didn't believe it was real.

Ms. Connor matched all five numbers. The winning ticket was purchased at 460 Sky Mart located at 2555 Orange Avenue in Roanoke.

"I needed some luck about now," she told Lottery officials while claiming her prize. Ms. Connor said she doesn't have any plans for the money at this time.

Alfonza Thompson of Danville

"It feels wonderful. I mean wonderful!"

That's how Alfonza Thompson described his feelings as he claimed the $100,000 top prize in the Virginia Lottery's Cash 5 game. The Danville man matched all five numbers in the June 28 day drawing.

He bought the ticket at Edgewood Mart,1501 West Main Street in Danville. The winning numbers were 3-6-9-12-15. He selected the numbers on his ticket using family birthdays.

"I wasn't so sure until I got home and looked at the ticket. Wow,I couldn't believe it!" he told Lottery officials as he claimed his prize.

Kevin Blair of Madison Heights

Kevin Blair of Madison Heights thought his father was joking when he called to say Kevin's numbers had been drawn in the Virginia Lottery's Cash 5 game. But it was no joke. He matched all five numbers in the June 28 day drawing to win game's $100,000 top prize.

"It feels great," he told Virginia Lottery officials as he claimed his prize.

He bought the winning ticket at Goldy's Truck Plaza,7335 Wards Road in Rustburg.

"I just like that number combination," he said.

Mr. Blair said the win will come in handy for paying his student loans.

Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The chances of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.
