The Free Clinic of the New River Valley is now changing the way it does business as a result of the Affordable Care Act.
The pharmacy will close next month as the clinic looks at its business model. Patients will still will be provided with medication through an online provider, Pharmacy Connection. The Virginia Healthcare Foundation created the program and pharmacists say it will save patients money by sending brand name prescriptions directly to their homes and save them money on the overall cost of medications themselves.
VHCF helps provide prescription medications to chronically ill individuals throughout Virginia and other states. "They would normally pay a four dollar administrative fee for each medication, they will pay just a forty dollar yearly fee for as many medications needed from that program and ninety days worth versus thirty days worth," explained Maria Kington of the Free Clinic.
The pharmacy will close at the end of August but patients are already being transitioned to the online system with the help of the free clinic.
