KINSTON, N.C. -

A Kinston woman was charged with felony cruelty to animals after she dragged a puppy from the back of her car.

Jennifer Marie Wilson, 26, of Kinston, is charged with felony cruelty to animals, unsafe movement and driving while intoxicated.

Witnesses told Kinston Police Officers they saw Wilson dragging a pit bull mix puppy that was attached to the bumper of her vehicle when she pulled into the parking lot of the Lunch Box convenience store on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The severely injured dog was turned over to the Lenoir County SPCA, where the animal's wounds were cleaned and bandaged.

"Our SPCA vet tech was called at about 4 in the morning, and the puppy was brought to the SPCA shelter out on Rouse Road," Jerry Henderson, president of the Lenoir County SPCA, told the Free Press of Kinston. "They administered what they could -- you know, cleaning the puppy up, and did what bandaging they could."

Officers noticed the dog's blood in the parking lot of the convenience store while investigating a motor vehicle collision.

Wilson was placed in the Lenoir County Jail under a $15,000 bond.
