Woman drowns in Amherst County

Posted: Updated:

A Delaware woman drowned while in Amherst County on Monday, the sheriff's office said.

According to Lt. G.L. Turner, 69-year-old Hope F. Stoeckel, of Georgetown, Delaware, was tubing on the James River with family as part of a group trip through James River Float Company.  Lt. Turner says Stoeckel slipped out of her tube around 1:00 p.m., and could not get back in.

Family helped Hope to the north bank of the river, near the east end of Percival's Island.  A worker with the float company began CPR, but could not revive Hope.

Investigators do not suspect foul play.

The float company released the following statement this evening:

"James River Float Company is deeply saddened by the turn of events today on the James River. James River Float Company is not certain of the exact chain of events that lead up to the fatality. We are gathering information as quickly as possible. It is known that all members of the group were wearing personal floatations devices and a guide with the James River Float Company performed CPR until Fire and Rescue Crews got there to continue CPR. At this point it would be inappropriate to speculate to the cause of death.

We at James River Float Company are deeply devastated and our hearts and prayers go out to the family."
